Provides one of the most vital units throughout the Sheriff’s office. Throughout the year, Community Relations Unit visits each Suffolk County School District as well as multiple clubs and various organizations. Its main goal is to bridge the gap between Law Enforcement and the members of the Community. CRU is responsible for implementing community outreach and school-based programs, organizing events, and promoting the Sheriff’s mission. The unit offers an array of Community and School-based programs free of charge for all Suffolk County schools, businesses, organizations, non-profits and agencies. Provides prevention and intervention programs with the goal of serving as a safety net for young people who find themselves entering the criminal justice system or for those who are at risk in the community and not currently on probation.
Works with youth between the ages of 12-15 who have been deemed as "at-risk," including youth who have a PINS or JD status through the family court or probation system, as well as referrals from the school district and the community as a whole. Mission of the program is to provide case management and groups such as Aggression Replacement Training (ART) for youth in order to reduce the rate of recidivism in their communities. Bi-weekly school visits and monthly home visits are provided, as well as daily reporting during programming hours to participate in groups, individual sessions, and recreational activities as mandated by the court or probation officer. In addition to resources provided during standard programming hours, a Crisis Hotline is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to assist families with emergency situations.
For Youth with Poor Academic/School Attendance, The Truancy Program is an initiative with the Niagara Falls School District to improve the academic success of individuals who have been identified as having difficulty attending school on a regular basis. Works with families to help improve school attendance and academic performance of students enrolled in the program through home and school visits and monitoring of attendance, grades, and disciplinary actions taken by the school. Staff will attempt to locate students who are absent from school without permission and provide tutoring services and transportation.
