Provides one of the most vital units throughout the Sheriff’s office. Throughout the year, Community Relations Unit visits each Suffolk County School District as well as multiple clubs and various organizations. Its main goal is to bridge the gap between Law Enforcement and the members of the Community. CRU is responsible for implementing community outreach and school-based programs, organizing events, and promoting the Sheriff’s mission. The unit offers an array of Community and School-based programs free of charge for all Suffolk County schools, businesses, organizations, non-profits and agencies. Offers various programs for community involvement to become aware and to help prevent crime, such as neighborhood watch, youth police academy, gang information, and other referrals for youth involvement also.

Offers a program that serves non-disabled and disabled students in middle school and high school who require highly structured services in an alternative setting. The educational environment parallels that of the JEA Alternative School. It is for non-classified students who are on long-term, out of school suspension as a result of a Superintendent's Hearing and classified students who need an Interim Alternative Educational Program as described in 201.7 of the Commissioner's Regulations. Placements may extend beyond the minimum of 45 days. This highly individualized, academic program includes Regents-level instruction. School-based counseling, behavioral management training, substance abuse treatment and court probationary services as well as support services from psychologists and social workers are also available. Investigates all crimes that involve persons under the age of 16 years. The Juvenile Offices are located within City Hall separate from the police department complex. This affords parents and juveniles a more comfortable and private atmosphere in which to talk to the Juvenile Officers.

Provides high intensity case management for youth in order to reduce the rate of recidivism in among youth in the community. Services include home visits, school visits, crisis intervention, court advocacy, family assistance, case reviews, anger control groups, and participation in restorative justice efforts.

An alternative to incarceration offering a sentencing and community supervision option for offenders.

Presents a program that is an evidence-based curriculum offered in many states throughout the nation. The classroom curriculum is taught by Suffolk County Deputy Sheriffs and Correction Officers who received specialized training to present to elementary and middle school students. Prevention as its primary objective, the program aims to prevent bullying, youth crime, violence, drug use, and gang involvement while promoting a positive relationship among law enforcement, families, and our youth. G.R.E.A.T. Lessons focus on life skills designed to help students avoid using delinquent behavior and violence to solve problems, and further helps them make positive choices in life. Offers alternatives to detention and state incarceration, supports youth post-adjudication to help with compliance and other needs, and provides reintegration support for youth transitioning out of these placements.

Offers a temporary home for 11 to 18 year old children who are court mandated. Provides a school program, individual counseling, and group dynamics. The Our Lady of Peace Academy is a free standing alternative school for grades 7 through 12. Individualized instruction and private tutoring is provided by qualified teachers.

Program serves disabled students, ages 11 through 21, who require highly intensive management needs due to conduct disorders. The program provides ongoing educational instruction that incorporates the Common Core Learning Standards. The services of a consulting psychiatrist are available for those conduct disordered students who also have psychiatric needs. In addition, strong emphasis is placed upon remedial instruction, vocational training and having each student's parents and family become part of the treatment. An after-school program is offered for students who are unable to attend a normal full-day school due to the students' disability(ies). This option is also suitable for students who are employed during the school day and who require after-school educational programming to complete their high school studies. Related services, support services and psychiatric consultation services are also offered for students who require these specialized services.

Provides educational programs within the community and schools within the Town of Southold via the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) Program and other programs that explore the law and responsibility in an attempt to prevent crime. Educates youth in various safety areas (for example bicycle, babysitting, etc.).

Provides diversion programs such as fingerprinting, Halloween safety, bicycle safety, police department tours, parent education, D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education), Juvenile Delinquents, P.I.N.S., etc., for children under 16.

Offers a supervision program for at-risk, pre-teen and youngsters under the age of 16. Focuses on establishing a discipline structure within the family with parenting skills offered. Supervised study group for at-risk juveniles failing subjects. Youth counselors function as parent advocate for juveniles needing services of the Justice and/or Mental Health System. Program is for parents and children together.

The County Department(s) of Probation and Corrections work to preserve the safety of the citizens and reintegration of offenders back into the community.

Provides in-home education and support to parents with children at-risk of out-of-home placement because of neglect or abuse. Staff visits family in their homes, providing individualized instruction tailored to the parents strengths and needs such as providing a safe and healthy environment for their child or children, child development and parenting skills, conflict management strategies, goal-setting, and accessing community resources.

A Person in Need of Supervision (PINS) is a person under the age of 18 who is incorrigible, ungovernable, or habitually disobedient and is beyond the lawful control of his or her parent or guardian.

Educates youth about their legal rights, increase their decision-making skills, teach them how to interact responsibly with police and other authority figures, and offer advice about how to stay safe when confronted with law enforcement.

Presents a series of workshops that motivate, educate and empower both adults and youth on the importance of reducing gang violence.
