Provides one of the most vital units throughout the Sheriff’s office. Throughout the year, Community Relations Unit visits each Suffolk County School District as well as multiple clubs and various organizations. Its main goal is to bridge the gap between Law Enforcement and the members of the Community. CRU is responsible for implementing community outreach and school-based programs, organizing events, and promoting the Sheriff’s mission. The unit offers an array of Community and School-based programs free of charge for all Suffolk County schools, businesses, organizations, non-profits and agencies. Provides an anti-vandalism project, indoor recreation, an opportunity for youth to develop interpersonal relationships, and provides an opportunity for youth grades 7-12 to become constructively involved in meaningful use of free time.

A program designed to keep first-time juvenile offenders out of jail by obligating them to make amends for their crimes, and guiding them away from getting arrested.

Offers a supervision program for at-risk, pre-teen and youngsters under the age of 16. Focuses on establishing a discipline structure within the family with parenting skills offered. Supervised study group for at-risk juveniles failing subjects. Youth counselors function as parent advocate for juveniles needing services of the Justice and/or Mental Health System. Program is for parents and children together.

Investigates all crimes that involve persons under the age of 16 years. The Juvenile Offices are located within City Hall separate from the police department complex. This affords parents and juveniles a more comfortable and private atmosphere in which to talk to the Juvenile Officers.

Provides prevention and intervention programs with the goal of serving as a safety net for young people who find themselves entering the criminal justice system or for those who are at risk in the community and not currently on probation. Works with youth between the ages of 12-15 who have been deemed as "at-risk," including youth who have a PINS or JD status through the family court or probation system, as well as referrals from the school district and the community as a whole. Mission of the program is to provide case management and groups such as Aggression Replacement Training (ART) for youth in order to reduce the rate of recidivism in their communities. Bi-weekly school visits and monthly home visits are provided, as well as daily reporting during programming hours to participate in groups, individual sessions, and recreational activities as mandated by the court or probation officer. In addition to resources provided during standard programming hours, a Crisis Hotline is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to assist families with emergency situations. For Youth with Poor Academic/School Attendance, The Truancy Program is an initiative with the Niagara Falls School District to improve the academic success of individuals who have been identified as having difficulty attending school on a regular basis. Works with families to help improve school attendance and academic performance of students enrolled in the program through home and school visits and monitoring of attendance, grades, and disciplinary actions taken by the school. Staff will attempt to locate students who are absent from school without permission and provide tutoring services and transportation.

Offers various programs for community involvement to become aware and to help prevent crime, such as neighborhood watch, youth police academy, gang information, and other referrals for youth involvement also.

Provides high intensity case management for youth in order to reduce the rate of recidivism in among youth in the community. Services include home visits, school visits, crisis intervention, court advocacy, family assistance, case reviews, anger control groups, and participation in restorative justice efforts.

Presents a series of workshops that motivate, educate and empower both adults and youth on the importance of reducing gang violence. Focuses on topics such as prevention/intervention, perils of gang life, decision making and gang awareness among others. Presents workshops for groups, schools and organizations. Programs offered include licensed after school and recess camp programs, adult and youth tennis, swimming lessons, water aerobics, lap swim, after-school gym programs, toddler programs, Badminton, adult floor hockey, basketball, volleyball, dodgeball, youth basketball lessons, open basketball, and floor hockey. Provides educational programs within the community and schools within the Town of Southold via the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) Program and other programs that explore the law and responsibility in an attempt to prevent crime. Educates youth in various safety areas (for example bicycle, babysitting, etc.).

An alternative to incarceration offering a sentencing and community supervision option for offenders.

Provides youth who are getting arrested, and engaging in at-risk behaviors, and their families with various options instead of incarceration, and counseling services.

A program to help minority, at risk male youth, to change their behavior and guide them to make better choices, through police partnership training, community involvement and working to build trust, life skills and knowledge so that they have an opportunity for success.

Offers alternatives to detention and state incarceration, supports youth post-adjudication to help with compliance and other needs, and provides reintegration support for youth transitioning out of these placements.

Provides an intensive, family focused, home, and community-based alternative to foster care placement or institutional for at-risk youth ages 11 to 17 years.
