Peer Advocacy - Mental Health Association
Peer Advocates provide an outreach program for recipients of mental health services in the community and for patients receiving treatment at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center in the Behavioral Health Service Unit. Peer-Linkage Advocates work with patients, family members, and outside sources, providing reassurance and notifying patients of all available services. The goal of Peer Advocates is to see that each patient has access to the best and most suitable resources. Information & Resources available include: - Self-help - Social clubs - Information on legal rights for psychiatric patients - Self-help groups - Referrals to community services and programs Peer Advocates: - Work with people who have psychiatric diagnoses - Work with friends and family members to help them to understand the process in the hospital - Keep clients informed about all available services - Make sure that the client will receive the best services and care available Peer Advocates are limited to helping admitted patients at NFMMC only. The Peer Advocacy Program also caters to educational needs and has established an advocacy information center and network.
