NEW YORK STATE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

Responsible for general supervision of all educational institutions in the State, operation of a number of education and cultural institutions, and for certifying or licensing teachers and practitioners of forty-seven professions. Charters all educational institutions in the state, developing and approving curricula, accrediting college and university programs, allocating State and Federal financial aid to schools, provision and coordination of vocational rehabilitation services. The commissioner exercises a quasi-judicial authority to review, upon appeal, the actions of any local school operates a school for the blind and school for the deaf.
