HOME DELIVERED MEALS | NASSAU COUNTY OFFICE FOR THE AGING
Provides home-delivered meals, to frail older persons who are unable to prepare meals for themselves, in addition to supporting nutrition counseling, nutrition education and congregate meals. The purpose of the program is to reduce hunger and food insecurity; prevent social isolation; and promote the health and well-being of older adults. In addition, home-delivered meals also represent an essential service for many caregivers, by helping them to maintain their own health and well-being through the provision of nutritious meals to those they care for. Eligibility
All the following program eligibility criteria are based on an in-home assessment conducted by a case manager and must be met by recipients: 60 years of age or older; spouse of eligible service recipient; or handicapped non-senior residing with a service recipient; Nassau County resident; has impaired mobility; unable to cook and/or shop safely due to health reasons; no local support system (formal or informal) available to meet needs; able to understand and carry out procedures to safeguard the food provided

Responsible for advising the County Executive and government officials on the problems and needs of the county’s 300,000 residents age 60 and over. Nassau County’s Office for the Aging empowers older persons to live more independently community wide. Responsibilities of the Office include; developing county-wide plans to provide services that assist older persons to remain independent for as long as possible, providing services that assist older persons to remain independent for as long as possible, supporting and recommending positive legislation for the elderly at state and federal levels by giving testimony at legislative and public hearings, providing information on legislative issues affecting older persons, serving as a funding agency for programs offered by other voluntary and government agencies, providing more than 70 programs for the elderly, such as health and counseling, county-wide, being an office of advocates for the elderly, operating on a five-days-a-week basis, as a multi-purpose senior center, maintaining a number of additional senior centers, maintaining a number of additional adult day service centers and maintaining a number of additional senior lunch programs.
